Practical tips for your stay

A few things to know before you arrive

Kangaroo Island is a wonderful place to slow down, explore and enjoy the outdoors. It’s also bigger than many visitors expect, with plenty of winding roads, beautiful detours and places where you’ll want to stop for a while.

A little planning will help you make the most of your stay at Clearwater Haven.

Getting to Kangaroo Island

Be sure to book your ferry well in advance, particularly for the summer school holiday season.  Sealink does have a drive-up, standby option, and you're very likely to get on a ferry the same day--but it may be not be the next ferry.

Getting around Kangaroo Island

Allow more time than you think. Distances can be deceptive, and you’ll often want to stop along the way. Rather than trying to see everything, choose a few areas to explore each day.

Plan your driving. Wildlife can be on or near the roads, particularly around dawn and dusk, so take care and avoid rushing. Many roads on Island are unsealed; a standard car is suitable for reaching Clearwater Haven, but drive to the conditions.

Stock up on essentials. It’s worth planning your groceries and other supplies before heading out for the day. Having what you need on hand makes it easier to relax when you return.  The groceries in Penneshaw and Kingscote are well stocked with whatever you may need.

A few things to know about the house

  • Eco-Friendly and Off-grid. Clearwater Haven is fully off-grid and proudly eco-friendly.  Please do not bring high-power electrical devices. While you cannot charge your EV on the property, there are charging stations on Island.
  • Heating for cooler weather. The house has heating and cosy faux-fur blankets for chilly evenings.
  • Mobile reception. Mobile coverage is available, but note Vodafone reception on Kangaroo Island is limited in some areas.
  • Come prepared for the outdoors.  You'll find yourself wanting to explore!Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, hats and a light jacket are useful in any season.

Make the most of the property

You don’t need to head out every day to enjoy your stay.

  • Follow the track to the beach. It’s a lovely place for a walk, beachcombing and enjoying the coastline. Swimming conditions vary, so assess the conditions before entering the water.
  • Look out for wildlife. Native birds are resident at the property, while kangaroos and wallabies also regularly.  You may also spot echidnas and and koalas.  Please observe wildlife quietly and from a respectful distance.
  • Look up after dark. With very little surrounding light, clear nights can offer wonderful stargazing.
  • Leave room for doing nothing. Some of the best holiday moments happen when you don’t have a schedule.

Traveling with children?

We’ve tried to make family holidays easier by providing practical essentials, including cots, a highchair, children's dishes and cutlery, toys and books, beach towels and a washing machine.

You can find more details on our For Families page. We hope having these things ready means less packing and more time enjoying your holiday together.

Our best advice?

Don’t try to see the whole island in two days. Allow time to explore, take the scenic route when you can, and enjoy having your own peaceful corner of Kangaroo Island to return to at the end of the day.

We hope you settle in, slow down and feel at home at Clearwater Haven.
